The Video Production Program offers a dynamic blend of hands-on creative training and critical media studies. Students explore the art and impact of visual storytelling through a core curriculum that includes courses in film and video history, journalism, new media, and intensive production. Majors specialize in either narrative or documentary filmmaking, gaining technical proficiency in shooting, lighting, sound, and editing using professional equipment and Adobe Creative Cloud software.

Courses are taught by internationally recognized artists and media professionals, with small class sizes that allow for individualized mentorship and collaborative learning. Housed in Express Newark, a state-of-the-art creative facility, the program provides access to HD video cameras, lighting kits, sound gear, green screen production, and professional editing labs.

Students also benefit from a robust internship program, connecting them to top media organizations in Newark and New York City, and preparing them for careers in film, television, streaming, digital media, journalism, and more.

The video production major is offered through the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media (ACM), which houses programs in art, art history, graphic design, journalism, music, and video production. Each major includes a shared ACM Core Sequence, a set of interdisciplinary courses designed to promote cross-program collaboration and community engagement. Shaped in large part by projects drawn from the rich urban region surrounding the university, the sequence includes:

  • Introduction to Arts, Media, and Culture

  • A program-specific course integrating interdisciplinary practice with a student’s chosen major

  • Either Colloquium in Arts, Culture, and Media or Seminar in Arts, Culture, and Media

This structure encourages students to think beyond disciplinary boundaries and make work that is responsive to real-world issues and audiences.
